When someone we care about loses someone, they cherish we often feel the burden or

pressure to say something we pressure ourselves into thinking that we must say something to

make them feel better. However, grief isn’t something you can fix by gathering some words and putting them into a sentence but being just there or very simple gestures can make them feel okay and not alone because grief isn’t something you fix, it’s something people carry. Here we offer a guide so you can just be there and do the right actions to support a loved grieving one.

Here's why just being there matters more than you think:

Words can fall short, but presence Doesn’t

Grief is deep, messy and personal no phrase will take it away

but when you sit beside someone in their pain without trying to rush it or push them

through the pain, you are giving them space to feel safe, seen

and not alone

Silence isn’t awkward but healing

We have a nature in filling the void or the silence we perceive as awkward and

uncomfortable specially in moments like grief even though, the grieving person often don’t

want advice, they just want someone to sit quietly beside them. No pressure just quite

company

You don’t need a plan, just show up

Very simple gestures, bring them a coffee or take them for a walk it might feel that you’re

not doing anything or not doing enough but in grief your presence is just everything it’s the

only right thing to do.

They may not say much, but they’ll remember

The griever remembers who stayed, who showed

up after everyone stopped showing or calling after

the first period of the grieving journey, they remember the friend who sat with them in silence and that memory becomes part of their healing journey.

We have to understand that we can’t take their pain away and that’s totally fine what you can really do is stay close. Support them in their journey and let them take the time they need without rushing them through the pain.

Being there doesn’t require the right words it just simply requires your presence, grief is

dark but, presence is light so don’t worry about saying it right just show up and sit beside

the pain, that’s where healing begins

So, if your loved one is grieving don’t overthink it, don’t wait for the perfect moment or the

perfect words just be there. Your presence is the beginning of the healing journey they

didn’t know they needed
